ILLIT ‘Chepohagesseo’: No. 2 on YouTube Korea
ILLIT 'Chepohagesseo' reached No. 2 on YouTube’s Trending Music list in Korea. The song also ranked No. 12 on the U.S. list and No. 13 on Melon’s daily chart dated Oct. 28.
'Chepohagesseo' is the title track of ILLIT’s fifth mini album, 'BREAK EVEN'. Its promotions include dance challenges and concept short films. I’m glad the campaign gives the track more than one kind of showcase.
The dance challenge has an “Easy” version, with light hand movements set to sped-up audio, and a “Hard” version built around powerful synchronized choreography. IU, Crush, Bang Ji-min of izna, and ENHYPEN members Jungwon and Sunoo joined in. The two formats give ILLIT 'Chepohagesseo' distinct challenge styles.
A short-form skit series draws on the song’s lyric premise that habitual kindness is a crime. The members respond to a whistle as a children’s hero squad, in a concept styled with a 1990s videotape texture. The idea also carries a retro-commercial sensibility associated with 'It'sMe'.
The performance-version music video was released on Oct. 29. Set in an apartment complex, it features a flash mob that brings together a security guard, children at a playground, and a cheer squad.
ILLIT also appeared at Yonsei University’s festival on Oct. 29. The group surprised the audience with magic-wand whistles and adapted part of the lyrics into “Chwipohagesseo,” a version aimed at university students.
ILLIT is set to continue music-show and other content activities with 'Chepohagesseo'. I’ll be cheering them on as they bring the song to music-show stages.
